Unit Overview

Introduce students to the five stages of cultural adaption which are experienced when moving to a new country as an international student. Go through the stages of honeymoon, culture shock, recovery, adaption, and explore the experience of reverse culture shock. Give practical examples of life in Australia and of the many cultural differences new students will experience. Develop cultural knowledge to support social and academic skills at university. Information will be given on cultural and academic expectations in Australia and how to develop a valuable local support network.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, students will be able to:

  • Explain the five common stages of cultural adaptation (Lectures 1.1 – 1.6)
  • Understand various methods on how to better adapt to a new culture

Assessment

Each lesson in this unit offers 100 credits, including:
